Date: 27 April |
Freedom Swim SeriesThe Freedom Swim Series is a succession of cold water Cape ocean swim races to promote swimming and to raise funds for good causes.
Each swim takes place on a public holiday specifically to celebrate these significant days and South Africa’s history and heritage. They aim to raise awareness of the significance of these public holidays and to give back by raising funds for causes which are related... to these national public holidays. Each swim in the series is detailed below. We will also you keep you posted about other Freedom Swim Qualifiers even if they are not a part of the Swim Series. (I learnt this the hard way (: ) We look forward to seeing you there! CURRENT NEWSPRESS RELEASE – Realtor of Excellence Freedom Day Swim 2013
27 April 2013 was a Freedom Day to remember. Massive freak swell predicted, yet the Freedom Day swim organiser’s and swim-calling committee had hoped for the best. Llandudno to Camps Bay 9km swim was impossible to navigate due to the swell and was called off at 7.50am.
All the swimmers moved to Camps Bay, where many volunteers from ETA and Vista Nova met them. Swimmers registered for the event and were rearing to go. The swell grew and conditions become impossible to swim after the 800m swim. The conditions during the 800m swim become so severe that the safety crew had their hands full trying to deal with a massive unpredictable shore brake and struggling swimmers. The swim committee gathered again and decided to call off the longer swims due to unsafe swimming conditions. On land the festivity grew with a live band, slippery slides and a jumping castle for the kids. The prize giving was directed to more of a fun filled experience, as there were no winners in the swim. The swimmers and the spectators got involved with showing off their dancing and singing skills to claim the prizes! Even though there was no swim everyone had fun, and raised awareness and funds for the Vista Nova School. Words from the Chairlady of Vista Nova “The Freedom Day Swim is a longstanding Friends of Vista Nova event and we thank Ram Barkai for his continued support of Vista Nova School.” From humble beginnings, this swim now forms part of the freedomswimseries.co.za and attracts local and overseas open water swimmers. Vista Nova is a public special school in Rondebosch, Cape Town, that provides remedial education to special needs children, including Cerebral Palsy, Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Attention Deficit disorder and a range of learning and physical disabilities. A team of teachers and therapists all work together to allow these children to reach their full potential and overcome their challenges. Learners come from across the Cape Peninsula and include all socio-economic, cultural and racial groups. The significance of fundraising is substantial, due to the large percentage of families that simply cannot afford the school fees and the proportionally higher running costs due to the specialized education provided.
